Job Description

Do you have strategic strengths, proven delivery skills, and political acumen? Do you have a driving interest in international development and New Zealand's place in the world?

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is looking for Development Managers with broad experience, including of international development, to join our Pacific and Development Group (PDG).

You will join the teams that are responsible for leading on New Zealand's relationships either in the Pacific or in Southeast Asia.  The roles are critical in shaping strategic direction, policy priorities and managing the complex and evolving portfolios of our development assistance.  You will work closely with teams across PDG and the wider ministry and government to deliver New Zealand's foreign policy interests.  You will also work closely with our High Commission/Embassy and with external partners and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate for this role will be a motivated professional who:

  • understands how to approach problems and make change happen in difficult contexts;
  • is a strategic thinker, has the ability to influence decision-makers and to represent the Ministry and New Zealand at the international level.
  • has experience in or in relation to developing countries;
  • demonstrates a sound knowledge of the international development landscape;
  • demonstrates knowledge of New Zealand's machinery of government
  • has excellent policy analysis, written and oral communication and relationship management skills; and
  • has relevant tertiary level education (ideally with a post-graduate qualification);

This is a Wellington-based permanent role.  Some off-shore travel will be required.  This role forms part of MFAT's rotational cadre of Development Managers.  For those interested, in the longer term, there will be opportunities to apply to move to other parts of MFAT or for a posting off-shore.
