We are looking for a creative, hugely energetic and experienced design thinker to steer the Mobile Innovation Lab, and nurture the Service Design team. The Mobile Innovation Lab works alongside Police officers to co-design solutions that make their jobs easier. To be successful in this role, we need you to have some critical skills:

Top three capabilities and strengths:

Knowledge and experience of design thinking - in particular, developing and managing a design programme of work

Good understanding of technology and systems

Understanding of Police hierarchies, internal structures and policies

Design thinking

We need someone who has hands on service design and design facilitation experience - running workshops and carrying out design activities as part of broader initiatives. The ideal candidate has to be creative, yet take a common-sense approach when necessary - keeping the team 'pithy' when needed. Feeling comfortable with ambiguity is critical, particularly during formative phases of design work.

Here are some other key skills:

Appreciates the value in tangential thinking

Takes a 'big picture' view

Can "walk into the weeds" with the team when necessary

Has a relentless devotion to the needs of the user.

The role requires someone with a good understanding of technology and systems - ideally at least 7 years of experience managing or being part of technology projects. An understanding of business, enterprise and solution In addition, we expect that technology in general will hold a good degree of interest - including emergent tech such as virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence.

Ideally, we are seeking someone who understands how Police or other complex organisations work and can navigate the myriad systems and policies. At least, good experience (5+ years) working within large government organisations is crucial.  An ability to understand organisational psychology and be able to within the boundaries to clear pathways for the design approach is critical.

Our ideal candidate is a true leader who trusts themselves and their team to do great work. They care about the health and wellbeing of the team. They always act with integrity and honesty, and have the ability to challenge risk adverse colleagues and conventional thinking for innovation gains.
