Are you interested in working and studying to become a fully trained Fingerprint Officer?


A vacancy exists within the Auckland Fingerprint Section for an entry level position, an Assistant Fingerprint Officer, based at Auckland Central Police Station. The section provides a service to a large geographical area covering metropolitan Auckland and Northland.

The Trainee position involves a five year career training and development programme. You will need to commit to a programme of study and to pass practical, theory and oral examinations on a regular basis. A Diploma in the Science of Fingerprints is awarded on successful completion of the programme. You will also need to attend some short block courses in Wellington and work away from Auckland from time to time. The successful candidate will be required to: work in an office, a laboratory, attend all manner of crime scenes, the mortuary, be on an on-call roster and give evidence in court.


The preferred applicant will:

  • Have a tertiary degree in science, forensic papers would be advantageous;
  • Have a minimum of level 3 NCEA passes in Chemistry and / or Science or the equivalent;
  • An aptitude for science and technical work;
  • Have practical computing and sound English language skills;
  • Previous or current fingerprint related skills /knowledge is an advantage

Technical Skills

  • Demonstrates an aptitude for science and technical work, a Tertiary qualification in the Biological Sciences or at minimum has Level 3 NCEA in Chemistry, Biology or equivalent preferable.
  • Demonstrates good oral and English language skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to concentrate and work unsupervised and under pressure for extended periods.

Special Requirements

Available to be on a rostered on-call period, work and self-manage in difficult or stressful situations at crime scenes and /or mortuary that are often difficult / unpleasant and require long hours of work.

Successful applicants will also need to have no criminal record, to pass a detailed security clearance check, reside within the Auckland district and provide medical evidence of visual acuity.

The successful applicant must be prepared to and available to work in weekends or overtime at short notice on occasions.


A practical, visual aptitude test may be part of the interview process.
