Job Description

  • Permanent or secondment opportunity for an experienced senior or strong adviser ready to step up
  • Do you have strong strategic and analytical skills and a strength for working with a range of stakeholders including across central and local government?
  • Do you want to work with an engaged and forward-thinking team in a small agile Ministry?

There's never been a more exciting time to work for the transport sector. Transport is a critical part of daily life for all New Zealanders. Transport affects every area of our society contributing to social, economic, environmental and health and safety outcomes.

The Ministry of Transport is the government's chief policy adviser on transport. Our job is to ensure that our transport system supports a broad range of outcomes, and is positively shaping the cities and places we inhabit.

We're looking for a senior adviser to join our Rail and Freight team. As a senior adviser in the Rail and Freight team, you'll lead key pieces of work, working closely with central and local government agencies to provide advice to Ministers on rail and freight matters.

Key areas of work could include:

  • Coastal shipping
  • The future of rail
  • Supporting provisional growth fund initiatives
  • Working on key government priorities at the ideas and analysis stage and seeing it into practice

We're looking for an experienced senior policy adviser or an experienced intermediate adviser ready to take the next step. You'll need a strategic focus, strong analytical skills, including numerical analysis, a strength for relationship management, and the ability to write and communicate effectively. You'll be comfortable working with ambiguity and will demonstrate a great attitude, initiative, and a genuine desire to grow your professional skills and experience. As a senior you will also be expected to provide coaching and guidance to others in the team.

Why work for us

We're a small, collegial agency, working in a fast-paced environment. You'll be close to the action and have plenty of opportunity to connect across the Ministry, with senior leaders and stakeholders.

We pride ourselves on maintaining a work culture that is supportive, encourages learning and recognises success.

This is a permanent position, however we are open to considering a secondment opportunity for the right candidate.

Join this energetic, motivated agency and make your contribution to New Zealand society, now and in the future.
