Job Description

We are looking for an experienced and energetic practitioner to lead the provision of specialist legal advice and support for the procurement and delivery of our major contracts.

This is a challenging role; the Department's major contracts are large scale, high value and high risk. You will come across fascinating issues with outcomes that confirm your reputation, among your peers, as an excellent lawyer. You'll be keen to share your knowledge, contributing an expert specialist perspective to legal services training, precedent development and as-required peer review of the work of others.

In this role you'll have the opportunity to use your insight and capability to influence colleagues in a way that reinforces the Department's strategic goals.  You will have the relationships skills to influence internal clients, suppliers, external legal providers and other government agencies. You will be required to negotiate with multinational and NZX listed companies.

You will sit primarily in our Commercial Services group, but will report to the Legal Manager-Commercial and be a key team member within the Commercial Legal team and the Legal Services Unit. When possible you will have the opportunity to work on other complex legal issues the Department faces daily.

If you are a personable and productive lawyer who:

  • has significant public law experience and is interested in the Justice sector and can commit to sector goals
  • provides high quality commercial law advise, within agreed timeframes
  • writes and communicates ideas well with highly developed inter-personal skills
  • works efficiently and effectively with high integrity
  • has at least six years post-admission legal experience and holds a practising certificate,

We can offer you a stimulating and challenging role in an organisation working and moving forward together.

Corrections embraces diversity and is committed to an inclusive workplace.  We recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and celebrate the collective talent of all employees
