Job Description

Ask those who work in our organisation and they will say, the passion for making a difference is incredible.  The work is highly stimulating, exposing you to a wide range of issues requiring critical thinking.  Whilst we are a large and complex organisation, we are a united workforce driving for change.

Due to growth and promotions, we are seeking to appoint two Senior Policy Advisors to join our small, supportive, dynamic policy team. The structure of the team means that all our advisors have the chance to be involved in various stages of policy making and are exposed to a very wide front line.

The issues that you will be dealing with will be varied, examples of which have included the management of high risk offenders, changes to the parole system, and addressing the harms caused by gang affiliation. The topics are thought provoking and stimulating.

Your work will be focused on developing practical policy solutions. This will see you carry out the policy design through to implementation where you will have the opportunity to really see the outcome of your work.

You will be involved in advising the Minister of Corrections and senior leaders on urgent matters and longer-term strategic issues. You will bring strong stakeholder management skills to the table as the Department works collaboratively with several other government organisations.

And we don't work alone. We work very closely with other representatives from the Justice Sector, and indeed, across the whole of Government, to ensure that our approach is consistent and delivers the best value for the community.

Your responsibilities in the role will include

  • Policy development
  • Provision of advice
  • Collaboration across government
  • Mentoring Policy Advisers

We want to hear from you if you are an experienced Senior Policy Advisor who has:

  • A highly developed ability to define problems and to apply creativity, logic and frameworks to the development of policy options
  • A sophisticated understanding of the trade-offs, risks and competing priorities that are common to policymaking
  • The ability to develop policy advice that advances the Department's strategic goals and priorities
  • A high level of team orientation and collaboration

You will also be able to demonstrate:
  • A strong understanding of the key functions of the State and core government processes, including how legislation is made and how agencies are funded
  • A clear understanding of how relevant governing legislation and international treaty obligations relate to policy development
  • Proven experience in developing policy advice for Cabinet and Cabinet Committees, including authorship of Cabinet papers with legislative and financial implications
  • The ability to establish and maintain organisational relationships and to build consensus in support of policy options
  • The ability to brief senior leaders and to represent the Department in a variety of policy-related forums

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Policy Professional who wants to be involved in high-profile and challenging policy issues and see real end results to their work.

Corrections embraces diversity and is committed to an inclusive workplace.  We recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and celebrate the collective talent of all employees.
