Salary Range $57,897 - $78,333

Bay of Plenty Police have a vacancy for Custody Officer in the District Custody Unit. This role is based in Rotorua. The District Custody Unit delivers support services to staff in the Bay of Plenty Police District.


The role of the Custody Officer is to ensure the safe, secure and humane containment and transportation of detainees within a Police custody environment. A custody environment is any location where a person is in Police custody including; cells, courtroom, prison, hospital, and the transit between locations.


Custody Officers are required to calmly and professionally process detainees, monitor their welfare, prepare reports and courtroom documents, update Police systems, provide meals and maintain security. This role requires a high level of integrity and professionalism. Custody Officers have the opportunity to use their initiative to make quick and well considered decisions in often volatile situations. This role needs a mature, non-judgemental and calm approach.


Mental and physical wellbeing are important components of the role of a Custody Officer. As part of the selection process applicants may be required to complete components of the health and fitness requirements that must be met by Police applicants. For more information please visit


Skills & Experience:

  • Demonstrate an ability to empathise with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage risk, following processes and procedures to ensure people are safe
  • Demonstrate experience in the Microsoft Office suite and the ability to adapt to new computer systems


Special Requirements:

  • Must be a New Zealand or Australian citizen, or a New Zealand resident, or have a valid New Zealand work visa to apply for this position
  • Successful applicant must reside in Bay of Plenty District
  • Applicants must hold a full class 1 NZ Driver's License and have competence in driving vans and small trucks
