Permanent

Salary range $73,393 - $112.741

Tasman District Police Prosecutions Service (PPS) is offering an exciting opportunity to join their team as a prosecutor.  The Prosecutor will be based in Blenheim however will work in both the Marlborough and West Coast offices, appearing in the Blenheim, Kaikoura, Greymouth and Westport Courts, therefore there is a requirement to travel on a regular basis.

This position may be subject to rotation to other offices. It is a busy and challenging role with plenty of rewards.

You will be part of a diverse group of Constabulary prosecutors, non-Constabulary lawyers, and support and managerial staff from the wider Tasman District.  In addition to being involved in courtroom advocacy, ranging from first appearance courts through to Judge alone Trials and sentencings hearings, you will be involved in various out-of-court case management processes, such as file analysis, writing submissions, and liaising with police investigators and defence counsel.

Your knowledge and understanding of key New Zealand statutes, such as the Criminal Procedure Act, Bail Act, and Evidence Act, combined with your desire and motivation to present well-constructed and compelling prosecution cases, will enable you to undertake a vital role in the Criminal Justice Sector and in the operationalisation of New Zealand Police strategy.

Skills and Experience Required - You will be able to

  • Prepare and present (written and verbal) information in a clear and concise way
  • Manage time effectively to complete multiple files and meet deadlines
  • Analyse files for appropriateness of charge, completeness and accuracy
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of plans, projects, or initiatives
  • Identify problems early, work with colleagues at multiple levels to make sound decisions, and pursue effective solutions.
  • Work effectively in partnership with internal and external stakeholders at multiple levels.
  • Experience in file preparation, file analysis, and justice sector processes is desirable
  • Sound understanding of prosecution and court processes with some experience in the court room as an advocate desirable
  • A sound understanding of the Criminal Procedure Act and Solicitor General Prosecution Guidelines is desirable

 

Special Requirements

  • Compulsory qualification - LLB and practicing certificate
  • Successful applicant will be required to travel between Blenheim and Greymouth offices regularly
