The purpose of the Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC) is to promote and protect health and disability services consumers' rights and to facilitate the fair and efficient resolution of complaints relating to infringement of those rights.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
The core work of our Assessment Team is receiving and managing complaints through to resolution, with this role having a primary focus on complaints associated with disabled people in Aotearoa New Zealand and working closely with the Deputy Commissioner Disability | Te Toihau Hauātanga Tuarua to promote and protect the rights of disabled people|tāngata whaikaha. You will impartially assess new complaints and suggest pathways for further assessment or resolution, draft letters, review responses and clinical information, and engage with consumers and providers. You will help to identify complaints that are suitable for direct resolution between the consumer and provider, and refer other complaints on for further investigation. This role may also require the assessment of complaints from the wider health and disability sector, about non-disability related matters.

• Excellent writing skills – including the ability to communicate with people from a wide cross-section of the community
• Exceptional phone skills, calm and professional approach, with a kind, empathetic manner
• Ability to impartially assess information about care and support against the Code of Health and Disability Consumers' Rights
• Resilience to difficult subject matter
• Proven ability to identify and solve problems
• Enthusiasm for, and a genuine interest in, the health and disability sector – in particular care, support and services provided to disabled people|tāngata whaikaha
• An appropriate tertiary qualification (health, disability or law) and/or a clinical or senior disability support background. (It is desirable but not essential that your background is in the context of the support of disabled people|tāngata whaikaha )
• At least two years relevant work experience, preferably more, for the Assessor role.
