Senior Legal Advisor - Prosecutions Support, Systems Advice and Capability at Crown Law Office, Wellington - Wairarapa

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Public Prosecutions Unit, Crown Law Office

Full-time, permanent role

Be part of the Public Prosecutions Unit's work to support the Solicitor-General's oversight of public prosecutions.

Mō mātou - About us

Crown Law provides legal advice and representation to the Government of New Zealand in the areas of criminal, public and administrative law. As the kaitiaki of the rule of law, we support the Solicitor-General and Attorney-General to determine the Crown's view of the law. We also provide leadership for the networks of Crown Solicitors, public prosecuting agencies and in-house Government lawyers.

Mō te Tūranga - About the role

Do you relish the challenge of trying to understand how effectively public prosecution services are being provided, as well supporting work to improve those services? If so, this position may appeal to you.

The Public Prosecutions Unit (PPU) was formed to support the increasing oversight of public prosecutions and the need to better manage the costs associated with Crown Prosecutions. As part of this work, the PPU administers the Crown Solicitor network including the funding of Crown Prosecutions, the conducting of performance reviews and the administration of the Crown Prosecutor classification system. In addition, the PPU also works closely with prosecuting agencies by undertaking reviews of their prosecution functions as well as supporting work undertaken by the Public Prosecutions Advisory board.

The purpose of the Senior Legal Advisor role is to lead the development and implementation of initiatives which include:

  • identifying additional approaches to ensure consistent prosecution standards are being applied across NZ's public prosecuting agencies as part of the Solicitor-General's general oversight of public prosecutions
  • supporting the Crown Solicitor network to further develop its capability across identified topic areas such as cultural competency, prosecutor wellbeing, and enable the sharing of system wide best practice standards
  • support the PPU and the Deputy Solicitor-General (Criminal) to investigate strategic opportunities to further enhance the Solicitor-General's oversight role.

This is a permanent role where the ideal candidate will have a strong general understanding of the New Zealand Justice sector but also an in-depth knowledge of public prosecutions services. As the role requires a high level of stakeholder engagement you will need to have experience in engaging across a variety of stakeholders at different organisational levels, combined with the ability to lead and deliver on a variety of projects.
