Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated intermediate solicitor to join our small in-house Legal team as part of the wider Corporate & Finance team.

The Legal team provides legal advice and support across the whole organisation, covering a broad range of matters in the contract, commercial, company, and public law areas.

A key area of work is the provision of legal support to our national Procurement Services team, which includes advising on, and undertaking legal reviews of, significant national contracts with major suppliers to NZ's district health boards, drafting contracts and other legal documents, and participating in negotiations with suppliers and their counsel if required.

You will be working with another in-house counsel and reporting to our Corporate Legal Manager.  You will need to be technically proficient, agile, and adaptable.

Why you are the ideal candidate:

This role will suit an enthusiastic, highly motivated and professional individual who:

  • is an excellent communicator open to collaboration, and not afraid of robust discussion or being challenged
  • is solutions-focused with a can-do attitude
  • will be keen to support our internal clients to achieve maximum benefits for the good of all New Zealanders
  • can deal with a wide variety of work in a fast-paced environment
  • is able to work unsupervised but is also a team player willing to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the small, supportive, in-house Legal team.

You will have worked (or are currently) in legal roles in the NZ health sector or the wider public sector, with an emphasis on contract and commercial matters.  An understanding of Government contracting (including procurement), is essential.  Experience with IT contracting and employment law, is also desirable. You will have an LLB and hold a current practicing certificate.  You must have no less than 2 years post-qualification legal experience.

Your interpersonal skills and ability to deal with internal clients in a professional manner is crucial.  In addition, you must also have highly developed time management and prioritization skills, to successfully handle a heavy workload within sometimes tight timeframes.

Who are we and what do we do?

Working smarter together is increasingly important in the health sector. Effective solutions that can be developed and shared between District Health Boards are required to meet the rising demand for healthcare   and cost of new clinical equipment. Together we can make a difference. That's why the country's 20 DHBs created NZ Health Partnerships in 2015.

While we are focused on administrative and support services, everything we do has direct or indirect clinical benefits. Ultimately, improving patient care is at the heart of what we do.
