Job Description

As part of the Prison Industry Leadership Team, this position has key accountability for providing advice and guidance on the implementation, transformation or improvement of new and current prison industries. 


Primarily the role is responsible for setting and leading the implementation of corrections offender employment strategy in a particular region by working with the regional leadership to implement prison industry solutions for their site. As well as regional support and leadership, the position will also be responsible for managing a portfolio of activities that includes contract management, tendering and general advice related to a specific industry sector and portfolio of work.


The position will work with their appointed region to develop medium to long term plans for the delivery of the offender employment strategy and provide commercial, business and training advice related to the performance of industries and how to mitigate related industry risks prior to them arising.   


Key deliverables will encompass: 

  • Responsibility for the implementation and championing of the offender employment strategy across the region
  • Provision of strategic and operational advice to the regions with regards to prison industries
  • Leading the development of regional industry plans
  • Supporting the development of site based offender employment plans
  • Supporting and monitoring the performance of regional and portfolio industry activities
  • Ensuring the regional and portfolio support model is effective in managing and maintaining industry activity performance
  • Design and implementation of a prison industries assurance framework that enhances the visibility of industry performance, risk and issue management in the region


This opportunity provides the chance to showcase your experience in the strategic development and implementation of industry frameworks and projects coupled with experience in a custodial or similar setting.

The successful appointee will demonstrate the ability to think laterally in order to address complex business issues, and capability to establish strong relationships both internally and externally with critical stakeholders.  


Ideally you will present with a working knowledge of project management, commercial, procurement and financial management, and experience in managing projects and/or contracts with key providers.


We welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate proven experience in management or senior advisor roles within a complex operational environment, complimented by the ability to think conceptually and make the big picture connections while remaining attuned to everyday operational issues.


Capability to influence, persuade and resolve critical issues is imperative, as is the ability to analyse and interpret large amounts of information effectively.

You may be based outside of Wellington so some flexibility may be possible, however it is expected you would be in Wellington four days a week at your own cost.   You will be responsible for supporting one of the following regions - Southern, Central or Northern.
