Working on the frontline at Corrections means you work face-to-face with offenders every day. You will engage and positively motivate some of New Zealand's most difficult citizens. Located in Upper Hutt, Rimutuka Prison is our largest prison in New Zealand. Winner of Prison of the Year in 2016, this prison boast a range of award winning and high profile programmes including Gate to Plate.


As a working prison, Rimutuka offers a range of Industry programmes aligned through Weltec, including Building, Painting, Waste Management. They currently build houses under contract to Housing New Zealand.


Rimutuka is nestled in park like surroundings, close to both Wellington City and the Wairarapa, which offers the best of both worlds for those who love the great outdoors.


As a Corrections Officer you'll be responsible for the safe, secure and humane containment of prisoners and for actively motivating them to make positive changes in their lives. You'll often spend more time with prisoners than anyone else, playing a key role in supporting them to participate in their rehabilitation and education programmes inside the wire.


We'll get you ready with a 11-week paid training programme that'll tap into your life skills and experience to equip you to succeed - it's more challenging, interesting and rewarding than you can imagine.

What does it take to make it?

 Given the environment and the people you'll work with, our standards are quite high and you'll go through a comprehensive selection process that'll make sure you're safe. We recruit our people from many different cultures with diverse backgrounds and experience who have:

  • A current full New Zealand or International drivers licence,
  • The legal right to work in New Zealand for a minimum 24 months,
  • Be able to pass a full drug test and medical assessment, and
  • Be free of or fully declare all criminal convictions or conflicts of interest (please note clean slate does not apply)

Starting salary of $51,490 increasing to $54,001 after initial training.   All candidates are required to complete a full disclosure criminal history check and pre-employment medical, physical and drug testing .
