Are you a highly motivated individual looking for an exciting opportunity to join a team that defends and protects against cyber security threats? The Defence Cyber Security Centre (DCSC) in Wellington CBD is looking for a senior incident responder to join our Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC) team.

In this role, you will be responsible for real-time analysis and response to escalated security events and alerts, as well as assuming leadership responsibilities and mentoring analysts when required.

As the senior analyst, you will have a crucial role in identifying, analysing, prioritizing, and remediating cyber incidents. You will be focused on external and internal threats originating from multiple sources, and your communication, coordination, and technical skills will enable you to assess critical situations and determine the next steps to mitigate threats. You will also be responsible for post-incident activities, including preparation, detection & analysis, containment, and eradication & recovery.

As a 24/7 operation, this position will involve some out-of-hours work in responding to incidents, and there is also an on-call component on a rotation. You will be compensated for this.

We want to hear from you if you are a naturally curious individual with a strong desire to solve problems. You need to be confident in your ability to assess critical situations and determine the next steps to mitigate threats.

You will be capable of applying your communication, coordination and technical skills to identify, analyse, prioritise and remediate cyber incidents.

You will need to demonstrate the following:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Cyber Security;
  • Practical experience in a Security Operations Centre (SOC) environment and/or experience with security monitoring, event and anomaly analysis and intrusion detection/prevention;
  • Experience in monitoring and incident response in a cloud environment (preferred but not essential);
  • Practical experience in parts of the cyber security incidents process;
  • Participated in Capture the Flag (CTF), reverse engineering and/or digital forensics activities (preferred but not essential);
  • Excellent problem solving and technical troubleshooting skills;
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to accurately document technical particulars, and the ability to engage with stakeholders to understand their requirements;
  • Technical competency across IT infrastructure, networking, IT security and associated risks;
  • Tertiary or industry qualifications are preferred.

In addition, you will be passionate about cyber security and take pride in contributing to a diverse team of cyber security professionals, whose performance is critical to the success of the NZDF. 

This position requires the individual to be a citizen of NZ, UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years and be able to hold a Top Secret Special security clearance. To be eligible for a Top Secret Special clearance, you must either hold NZ citizenship, be a NZ Permanent Resident or hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa AND have a 15 year checkable background in countries where meaningful and reliable checks can be undertaken. Where requisite checks are unable to be made, your application may not allow progression.

Please note: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • You must have been an NZ Citizen for at least 10 years. Alternatively, you must hold NZ Permanent Residence or hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and have been a citizen of UK, USA, Canada or Australia for 10 years.
  • You must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance. Ordinarily to obtain this level of clearance candidates must have 15 years of verifiable background history in countries where a meaningful background check can be undertaken and assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service.
