You will be providing subject matter expertise on Counter Intelligence (CI) for Defence Security within the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF). This role delivers CI products and guidance through identification, analysis and assessment of intelligence and security threats to the people, information, and assets of the NZDF.
As a senior within this team, you will be taking on more complex and challenging strategic assessments, lead the maintenance of analytical rigour within the team, and provide coaching and mentoring to our junior analysts.
Duties for this role will include:
- Identifying, analysing and assessing intelligence or security threats.
- Delivering briefs and exemplary intelligence reports to senior management, customers and stakeholders.
- Ensuring the provision of high-quality intelligence information to support well informed decision making by NZDF Leadership / Command.
- Building and maintaining strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Mentoring and coaching junior team members.
This role sits within the Counter Intelligence and Personnel Security (CIPS) function. CIPS encompasses PERSEC, the Clinical Psychology function and the Defence Counter Intelligence team (DEFCI). CIPS is also responsible for managing the NZDF approach towards Insider Threat activities.
This role is based in Wellington CBD. Due to the nature of this role, you need to work primarily in the office. Once you have undergone training and are up to speed, there is the option of working from home one day a week.
Occasional domestic and international travel is required. You need to have a Class 1 Full Driver's Licence, and valid passport.

Please note: As this role requires a high level of National Security Clearance, you will need to be / have been a NZ, UK, Australian, Canadian or USA citizen for a minimum of 10 years to be eligible for this role.
The successful candidate is required to undergo a psychological assessment as part of the pre-employment security vetting process.

You will have experience in complex strategic analysis, with well-developed research skills and a good understanding of threat analysis. You will be an experienced intelligence practitioner who can effectively apply intelligence tools, techniques, and methodologies, with an ability to develop and deliver effective briefings and produce tailored products to specific target audiences.
Key skills and experiences you will bring to this role include:
- 3+ years' experience in delivering assessments and analysis within a government intelligence environment.
- Excellent communication, both written and verbal. A written test will form part of the formal panel interview.
- Demonstrable interpersonal skills in building and maintaining strong partnerships.
- The proven ability to mentor, coach and develop others, as well as an ability to work collaboratively.
- Exceptional time management skills to prioritise a large workflow, while also remaining agile for changing requirements.

To be eligible for the required level of government security clearance with the NZ Defence Force, you need to meet certain citizenship and residency criteria. Here's what you need to know:
Higher Level Security Clearance
- You must be a New Zealand Citizen for at least the last ten (10) years.
- At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last ten (10) years.
- To obtain this level of clearance, you must have a background history of fifteen (15) years that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
