Financial Analyst at NZ Defence Force, Wellington - Wairarapa

Mō te tūnga | About the role

You will support the Land domain through comprehensive financial management across operating, pre‑acquisition and capital portfolios. Working closely with Domain leadership, programme managers and finance partners, you will ensure accurate financial planning, reporting and governance across the capability lifecycle.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing financial oversight across land domain operating and pre‑acquisition budgets, including planning, monitoring and rebalancing.
  • Producing clear, high‑quality monthly financial analysis and reporting for senior stakeholders.
  • Supporting programmes and projects to develop Whole‑of‑Life Costing and business cases in line with NZDF and Treasury processes.
  • Acting as a financial advisor to programme and project teams, supporting funding approvals and in‑flight financial management.
  • Maintaining accurate project and financial information within SAP and project systems.
  • Building strong working relationships across Capability Branch, Finance, the Ministry of Defence and wider NZDF.

You will be an experienced finance professional who is confident operating in a complex, governance‑driven environment. You are comfortable working at pace, influencing senior stakeholders, and providing clear advice where accuracy and judgement matter.

You will bring:

  • Practical experience in financial management, accounting, or business analysis, ideally within a large or complex organisation.
  • Strong analytical capability, with the ability to interpret and explain financial data to non‑financial audiences.
  • Experience supporting programmes or projects, including budgeting, forecasting and cost modelling.
  • Confidence influencing decisions and building credibility through expertise rather than formal authority.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, balanced with an ability to see the bigger picture.

To be eligible for the required level of government security clearance with the NZ Defence Force, you need to meet certain citizenship and residency criteria. Here's what you need to know:

Higher Level Security Clearance

  • You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
  • At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last ten (10) years.
  • You must have a ten (10) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
