Defence Science & Technology (DST) is a civilian unit within the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), delivering scientific advice and technical support to the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Based at Devonport Naval Base, DST brings together a multidisciplinary team working on challenges spanning underwater to space—supporting the NZDF to operate in increasingly complex and contested environments.
We're looking for a Research Scientist/Engineer to join our Undersea Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (UISR) team.
You'll contribute to research that enhances NZDF's undersea sensing capabilities, with a strong focus on underwater acoustics and a growing interest in autonomous systems. The role offers a high level of technical challenge, along with strong opportunities for professional development.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead and deliver research in undersea sensing and related technologies.
- Provide expert technical advice to NZDF and government stakeholders.
- Communicate research outcomes through reports, presentations, and briefings.
- Collaborate with national and international research partners.
- Contribute to future capability development and research direction.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience
You're a technically strong and curious problem-solver who enjoys applying science to real-world challenges.
You will have:
- A university degree in Physics, Engineering, or Applied Mathematics (essential); a master's or PhD is preferred.
- Experience in one or more of the following technical areas:Physics-based modelling and simulation.
- Digital signal processing.
- Magnetic sensing and source reconstruction.
- Underwater acoustics and communication systems.
- Navigation, robotics, and autonomy.
- Proficiency in scientific computing tools such as MATLAB, Python, and C; some experience in embedded systems engineering would be advantageous.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable Experience
- Approximately five years' experience in a maritime defence role, or in a related industry or academic environment.
Couple of things to note
- You will need to be able to travel nationally and internationally as and when required.
- You will need to be comfortable working in military environments (for example at sea).

Higher Level Security Clearance
- You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
- At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last ten (10) years.
- You must have a ten (10) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
