Casual Library Assistant at NZ Defence Force, Wellington - Wairarapa

Mō te tūnga | About the role

Support the NZDF Library Network in a casual role providing customer service, circulation support and collection maintenance. With a variety of tasks across library operations, no two days are the same as you help ensure resources are accessible, organised and available to NZDF personnel and their whānau.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide loan, return and customer enquiry services
  • Process and maintain library collections and resources
  • Receive, record and manage serial publications
  • Update and maintain records in the library management system
  • Assist with stocktakes, collection maintenance and shelving
  • Support library operations and information services across NZDF

Due to the nature of this role, there is no option to work remotely.

We're looking for a reliable individual who enjoys helping people and has strong attention to detail. You'll be organised, adaptable and comfortable managing a variety of tasks, as no two days are quite the same. You'll be able to work independently when required, follow direction, and take pride in delivering high-quality work. You'll also be naturally curious, enjoy understanding the purpose behind your work, and be keen to contribute ideas for continuous improvement.

You will bring:

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work autonomously and follow instructions
  • Good computer skills and confidence using digital systems
  • Experience in a library, administration or support role (advantageous)
  • Proactive approach to improving processes and ways of working
  • Ability to safely lift and move library materials up to 15kg

To be eligible for the required level of government security clearance with the NZ Defence Force, you need to meet certain citizenship and residency criteria. Here's what you need to know:

Low Level Security Clearance

  • You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
  • At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last five (5) years.
  • You must have a five (5) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
