The role:

We have an exciting opportunity for a BI Senior Analyst to join our dynamic team and help shape this new role and make it their own.

As part of the Defence Directorate of Security, you will play a key role in turning data into actionable insights to improve the performance and impact of security management across the NZDF. You will work in a high paced, varied and challenging role focused on delivering reporting, dashboards and interactive data visualisations across security operational performance, risk management, project management and business improvement functions.

We have a large amount of data but are working to significantly grow this to better enable our security business intelligence and insights capability. You will contribute to bringing together and interpreting existing data to provide compelling and actionable insights, while providing input into the requirements and opportunities to grow our data sets and further enable and deliver our business intelligence impact.

Our goal is to enable the Defence Directorate of Security and wider NZDF to protect its people, information and assets as effectively as possible by providing the right information to the right people at the right time.

The person:

This role requires an individual who is passionate about turning data into meaningful, value-add information and insights to empower others.
You'll be adaptable, curious, a great problem solver and able to work across various systems and data sets with ease to achieve your goal. You'll need a collaborative approach with the ability to effectively gather requirements, understands challenges and communicate effectively with different audiences.

You will be able to tell a clear story by making information relevant, interesting and empowering.

You will have mastered Excel and have experience with one or more BI application like PowerBI, Qlik or Tableau. A technical background with exposure to the Microsoft stack, SQL and database design, SSRS, MS Reporting Services and data analytics packages would be beneficial, but you may come to this role from a variety of directions or backgrounds.

You will be action and delivery orientated, able to think outside the box, thrive in an environment where you have a level of freedom to problem solve and present ideas, and relish being part of a dynamic team focused on making a real impact.
There are opportunities to grow and develop this role, with support for training and development to develop the capabilities of both you and team.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.


If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
