Scientist/Engineer – Information, Intelligence and Surveillance

The Defence Technology Agency (DTA), based in Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand, is a multi-disciplinary organisation that provides direct support to the New Zealand Defence Force for acquisition projects, operations, and future force development. We have a position for a Scientist or Engineer within the Information Intelligence & Surveillance Section of the C4ISR Systems Group. We are seeking an individual who can make a strong contribution to ongoing and potential future projects in one or more of the following areas:

  • Automated processing and analyst support systems to monitor and interpret the operational environment;

  • The application of data analytics to contribute to our understanding of the strategic environment;

  • The use of statistical methods and machine learning to enhance maritime domain awareness;

  • Geospatial and imagery management, and data discovery and access services.

You will need expertise in a number of the following areas:

  • Machine learning and/or automated reasoning;

  • Geospatial and imagery processing, analysis and exploitation;

  • All source and big data analytics;

  • Data discovery, access and dissemination;

  • Information management, architectures and interoperability;

  • Modelling and simulation using tools such as MATLAB;

  • The development of prototype software in languages such as Python and Java.

We are seeking applicants with preferably some prior experience in a science position or engineering consultancy role, or with a strong academic background. A postgraduate qualification in a quantitative science or engineering discipline is preferred. Since this position requires liaising with a variety of stakeholders, proven written and verbal communication skills will be highly valued, as will good interpersonal skills.

The salary banding for this role ranges from grade 16 - 20. Total remuneratoin offered will be commensurate with skills and experience.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:
Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
