Job Description

The Defence Technology Agency, based in Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand, has a position for a Scientist/Engineer with a strong desire to progress relevant research in next generation networking technologies. We are seeking an individual who can make a strong contribution to ongoing and future projects in:
  • The characterisation and optimisation of networks over

    • Satellite Communications Links – Fixed and mobile

    • High Frequency (HF) Radios

    • Modern Tactical Radios

  • IP networking and routing including IPv6

  • Contemporary wireless networking technologies including Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANET) and Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWAN)

  • The application of emerging commercial approaches such Software Defined Networking, Clouds and Low Power Wide Area Networks in a military context


You will need a strong record of independent research and expertise in a number of the following areas:

  • Network performance characterisation and estimation of minimum application system requirements using robust and repeatable methodologies

  • The capture and analysis of network metrics using tools such as Wireshark, iPerf & PingPlotter.

  • The development of analysis tools using languages such as Python & java

  • The ability to report results in an appropriate written and verbal manner

  • Network optimisation through the use of appliances and/or system configurations

We are seeking applicants with preferably some prior experience in a science position or engineering consultancy role, or a strong academic background. A postgraduate qualification in a quantitative science or engineering discipline is preferred. Since this position requires liaising with a variety of stakeholders, proven written and verbal communication skills will be highly valued as will good interpersonal skills.

The salary banding for this role ranges from grade 16-20. Total remuneration offered will be commensurate with skills and experience.

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
