Job Description

The Defence Technology Agency (DTA), based in Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand, is a multi-disciplinary organisation that provides direct support to the New Zealand Defence Force for acquisition projects, operations and future force development. We have a position for a Scientist or Engineer with expertise in signal processing. We are seeking an individual who can make a strong contribution to ongoing and potential future projects in:
  • Processing and analysis of multi-channel acoustic data

  • Waveform design for acoustic and/or radio-frequency sensing applications

  • Radio-frequency signal processing

  • Machine learning on large data sets
  • Internet-of-things and next generation sensing technology

You will need expertise in some or all of the following areas:

  • Analog and digital signal processing

  • Acoustic and/or radio-frequency sensing and data collection

  • Time-frequency transforms and spectral analysis

  • Modelling and simulation using tools such as MATLAB and Python
  • Statistics and machine learning

We are seeking applicants with some prior experience in either a science research or engineering consultancy role, or who possess a strong academic background. A postgraduate qualification in a quantitative science or engineering discipline is essential, with a PhD degree preferred. Since this position requires liaising with a variety of stakeholders a high level of written and verbal communication skill is required, as are good interpersonal skills. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:
Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
