Job Description

  • Work with and manage a diverse collection
  • Join a flexible and supportive team

  • Lots of scope in this role

Bring your interest in New Zealand military and maritime history and work with a wide ranging collection.

What you will do

The Photographic Archivist is responsible for the care and management of the Navy Museum photographic collection including negatives, prints, slides, and film; and stewardship of the New Zealand Defence Force negatives. This is a busy role and a typical day may include answering queries and dealing with image requests,  cataloguing and digitising collections, and generating prints for in house exhibitions.

What we need

We are seeking a person who understands historical photographic techniques and has experience in cataloguing, and digitisation. In addition to this you will need to have knowledge of the management of photographic collections, preservation, handling, and preventive conservation along with an understanding of copyright legislation.

Ideally you can bring relevant experience of working with photographic collections preferably within a Museum environment. Being technically savvy you are confident with image processing software, digital capture and printing.

You may currently be in a more junior post in a Museum or Library working with photographic collections; this role could be the next step in your career.

Who we are

The Navy Museum's mission is to capture and preserve New Zealand's naval culture and heritage for current and future generations through collection, preservation, presentation, education, research and scholarship.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force is contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

Why Us

This role is an opportunity to play a key part in the ‘behind the scenes' work that goes into making the Navy Museum a success.
