Job Description

  • Help develop a new occupational health programme
  • Build on your existing skill base in a unique environment

  • Join a MDT health & safety team

Play a part in developing an occupational health programme for the RNZAF's existing asset base and a new generation of aircraft.

What you will do

The Principal Occupational Hygienist is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing management of a comprehensive occupational hygiene programme for the RNZAF. The programme supports the RNZAF Strategic Plan to deliver a strong airworthiness and safety culture (AF8).

In this role you will also lead and supervise other Directorate of Air Force Safety & Health (DASH) staff to meet and maintain minimum legislative competency standards. This also includes specific duties relating to substances hazardous to health.  These capabilities are provided to all RNZAF Bases, and all NZ based exercises and overseas deployments involving RNZAF personnel.

What we need

We are seeking a person with significant and relevant occupational hygiene experience who has worked at a senior level. Alternatively this experience may be in the form of work undertaken while under the supervision of a professional hygienist.

Ideally you will have or be working towards an internationally recognised occupational hygiene qualification that is approved by the NZ Occupational Hygiene Society. Having a good working knowledge of the relevant legislation you will also be a member of a recognised hygiene organisation.

Delivering and developing training courses to professional groups isn't new for you. You are a confident communicator, both orally and in written form, and are more than happy to engage with a wide range of people across the organisation.

The point of difference in this role is that you will be supporting flying operations which will require you to carry out assessments in an aircraft environment. A good level of physical fitness will ensure that you can perform all job related tasks such as working at heights or in confined spaces and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.

Who we are

DASH enhances RNZAF Safety & Health to preserve operational capability. This is achieved through leadership & management in the disciplines of Aviation Medicine, Flight Safety, Workplace Health and Safety, and Occupational and Environmental Health.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force is contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

Why Us

This is a very unique opportunity in a specialist area of work. You will be integral in developing a

new occupational health programme for a new generation of aircraft. Opportunities like this don't come around very often!

Check out the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF!
