Job Description

What you will do

As Senior Advisor you will be responsible for leading the design and delivery of cross NZDF organisational development initiatives that align to our organisational and people strategy and keep the experience of the users, our people, at the centre of everything you do.  Getting out and experiencing the reality, influencing (in person and writing), partnering with our many and diverse stakeholders, and identifying root causes will be key to your success. Initially you'll lead a behaviour/cultural change programme in relation to performance and development, but we have many other impactful and interesting work streams ahead requiring your leadership. Project management skills will be key to delivering these programmes which have multiple work streams and interdependencies. 
You will be joining a cohesive group of people who support each other, and will apply contemporary OD thinking and approaches and constructively challenge the way things are done to future proof an organisation. This is a senior role where you will be required to mentor and coach team members and to share your knowledge and expertise.  As a member of the broader OD Directorate you will also be responsible for contributing contemporary OD thinking to help shape and deliver a broad and integrated OD framework

What we need

The ideal person for this will be an experienced Senior Advisor, perhaps looking for growth through challenging experiences in one of NZ's largest and most complex organisations. You will have exceptional interpersonal skills and enjoy getting out into the wider business to drive what the OD team are achieving. You have well developed relationship building skills with the ability to influence a broad range of people and partner with our stakeholders. 
You will have excellent writing skills with experience in writing papers including the ability to express complex constructs in a clear and precise manner. You think with a ‘systems' and strategic perspective, but have empathy for the user and design and deliver practical interventions. You have a strong background in OD with good knowledge of best practice and contemporary OD approaches, are curious and have a strong learning mind-set to stay up to date. You're experienced in setting up and managing programmes with multiple work streams to ensure they deliver the desired effect.
You function well in a team environment, and are at ease coaching and mentoring colleagues, but also work autonomously in order to achieve results. There is an element of facilitating development programmes and running sessions with leadership teams and you'll have successfully done this before. Ideally you will have a minimum of 7 yrs broad experience at both an operational and strategic level and proven experience delivering OD initiatives in complex environments.

The Organisational Development Programmes team leads the design, planning and implementation of OD strategy and programmes that support NZDF's workforce of 14,000 people to achieve its strategic direction. The OD Programmes team is part of the OD Directorate which also includes our Career and Talent Management Team, Diversity and Inclusion and Psychologists and is part of the People Capability Portfolio.

Please note: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Low level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last five years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
