Job Description

What you will do

The Deputy Director Service Management is a newly created position reporting to the Director Service Integration within our Communications and information Systems (CIS) branch.

In this role you will be the master of the live environment: responsible for managing the Service Catalogue for CIS Branch and acting as the gatekeeper to ensure our complex Information and Communication Services (ICS) are in a fit state to be received and supported globally.

This is a completely green fields role so we are looking for someone who will be excited about the opportunity to:

  • set up a brand new  Service Management practice in line with (but not exclusively using) the ITIL framework;

  • establish a new service catalogue;

  • advise and assist in the implementation of an ITSM tool;

  • recruit, lead and develop a new team who'll oversee the branch-wide process of capturing service requirements and service planning;

  • advise on service management training and development requirements  for staff  across the branch.

In doing so you and your new team will ensure that our CIS Branch is sufficiently resourced and capable to meet its future commitments.

Who we are

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force contributes to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

CIS Branch provides the core information and communication services that underpin New Zealand Defence operations.  We enable the interaction between our people, our partners and the broader defence community, at home and abroad.

CIS Branch is totally unique, we are entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe. We work locally and globally to provide solutions to military-specific challenges and to ensure Defence information can flow efficiently and securely between New Zealand and our Allies.

Why Us

Let's just say we're not your typical corporate IT department:

  • We provide support to more than 14,000 military and civilian Defence Force personnel who are dispersed on seven continents, often in geographically remote, hostile environments;

  • Our solutions are deployed to personal devices, vehicles, ships and planes;

  • We're here to deliver military outcomes, not just the technology behind them.

It's also the perfect time to join us. We are in the process of transforming our culture and the way we work so we truly understand our customers and partner with them strategically.

By joining us as we evolve to a modern, shared information and technology platform, you will be part of a culture that endears trust, empowers decision-making and respects people.

What we need

We are keen to hear from you if you are an ICT Operations Manager, Service Delivery or Service Integration Management professional with experience working in a large scale matrix environment.

You will also need to be customer-focused, capable of building sound working relationships, able to collaborate and manage multiple stakeholders.

In particular you will need:

  • A broad understanding of business and ICT, including the ability to monitor the market and a holistic view of current and emerging ICT products, services, and technologies;

  • The knowledge and skills to ensure operational procedures are fit for purpose, and identify and solve operational issues across the Service Management function;

  • The leadership skills needed to manage a variety of stakeholders and direct reports. Must be able to provide direction, support, and guidance where necessary, and facilitate effective working relationships within teams;

  • The ability to concisely and clearly communicate on the current landscape of the Service Management function to Director of CIS Service Integration and other stakeholders;

  • Knowledge of managing ICT projects in a business environment including adhering to budget requirements;

  • Demonstrable  experience with ITIL and ideally some familiarity with other service management frameworks such as Cobit or ISO9000

Experience working with technology in a military context is an advantage; however you may come from a similarly complex environment in government, banking or consulting.

You must be able and willing to travel if required, within New Zealand and overseas.
Please note: we are currently working through our longer-term office location requirements in the broader Wellington area. In the interim you would need to be able to work from our current CIS offices across the Wellington and Hutt Valley region.

Come and be part of the change.  What we do matters!

Check out the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF!
