Job Description

What you will do

As Senior Advisor Engagement and Communications reporting to the Deputy Director Engagement and Business Relations within our Communications and Information Systems (CIS) Branch you will be responsible for developing and delivering all internal CIS communications initiatives, including those related to our current and upcoming change management and consultation processes.

This is a new role where you'll not only lead and facilitate effective two-way communication between CIS Branch leadership and staff but you'll establish and embed effective business as usual communications processes and practices (including advising on effective communications channels) from scratch.

And on top of that you'll also:

  • Lead the implementation of an engagement framework and development of a staff engagement and communications strategy;

  • Develop engaging and consistent collateral across multiple platforms and channels for internal and external audiences;

  • Leverage events to create engaging content to share across the CIS Branch;

  • Develop briefing material and other collateral for CIS Branch and NZDF leaders

  • Guide, coach and encourage managers and leaders to openly communicate with CIS Branch staff and keep them engaged in the strategic direction of the branch.

Who we are

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force contributes to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

CIS Branch provides the core information and communication services that underpin New Zealand Defence operations.  We enable the interaction between our people, our partners and the broader defence community, at home and abroad.

CIS Branch is totally unique, we are entrusted to deliver and support the Defence technology that helps keep New Zealanders safe. We work locally and globally to provide solutions to military-specific challenges and to ensure Defence information can flow efficiently and securely between New Zealand and our Allies.

Why Us

Let's just say we're not your typical corporate IT department:

  • We provide support to more than 14,000 military and civilian Defence Force personnel who are dispersed on seven continents, often in geographically remote, hostile environments;

  • Our solutions are deployed to personal devices, vehicles, ships and planes;

  • We're here to deliver military outcomes, not just the technology behind them.

It's also the perfect time to join us. We are in the process of transforming our culture and the way we work so we truly understand our customers and partner with them strategically.

By joining us as we evolve to a modern, shared information and technology platform, you will be part of a culture that endears trust, empowers decision-making and respects people.

What we need

We are keen to hear from you if you are an experienced and business savvy communications professional with a can do attitude, and the ability to drive results and think out of the box.

In addition you will need:

  • Experience in delivering effective engagement and communications collateral and outcomes to a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders;

  • Strong influencing style and communication skills;

  • The ability to work with detailed information and numerical data and present it in a way that is easily understood by people at different levels.

  • Knowledge and experience of proactively supporting delivery and outcomes in a dynamic, deadline-driven project environment;

  • Experience applying performance measurement techniques to assess the effectiveness of communication and engagement activity;

  • Knowledge and experience of event management;

  • The ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement;

You must also be able and willing to travel within New Zealand and overseas if required.

Come and be part of the change.  What we do matters.

The remuneration band for this position is $99,123 - $122,446 inclusive of a 4% employer superannuation contribution.

Please note that we are currently working through our longer-term office location requirements in the broader Wellington area. In the interim you would need to be able to work from our current CIS offices across the Wellington and Hutt Valley region.

Check out the great benefits for you and your family when you join NZDF.
