What you will do
 
Defence Excellence is a strategic-level unit within the Office of Strategy & Governance, focused on fostering a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and organisational excellence across the Defence Force.  A key aspect of this role is to deliver the NZDF's programme of continuous improvement activity, generating results for the NZDF.
 
The Continuous Improvement (CI) Manager is a Lean Six Sigma qualified expert and will facilitate improvement activities across all levels and services of the NZDF. 
 
As the CI Manager, you will coach and mentor NZDF personnel to deliver improvement initiatives with measurable and sustainable benefits to the organisation. You'll influence the level and type of Improvement Activities undertaken through a selection process.

What we need
 
An organised and driven people-person with extensive Lean Six Sigma experience delivering continuous improvement benefits. Demonstrated success implementing improvement initiatives that contribute to an organisation's strategy. You'll also have experience with the delivery of Lean Six Sigma training and mentoring teams to deliver continuous improvement outcomes.
 
Your experience in presenting to and facilitating with small groups and your ability to develop and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders will be vital to your success in this role. Refined communication, problem solving and influencing skills are essential.
 
Our ideal candidate has a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, a relevant tertiary qualification and has the ability to operate at both strategic and operational service delivery levels interchangeably. The candidate will appreciate the linkages between effective planning, implementation, performance management, performance improvement and governance.

Who we are
 
The Office of Strategy & Management supports the Chief of Defence Force by managing the Defence Force's strategy and planning, portfolio management, performance management, performance improvement and governance arrangements.  This includes;

  • Leading planning and oversight of the Defence Force strategy
  • Leading NZDF's annual and four-year planning processes, ensuring supporting plans are aligned with the Defence Force's objectives
  • Strategic portfolio definition and prioritisation
  • Monitoring delivery of plans and providing advice to improve performance
  • Preparation of external accountability documents for the Chief of Defence Force
  • Leading the development and implementation of NZDF Continuous Improvement, Innovation and Organisational Excellence (Defence Excellence) programmes
  • Governance support and advice

The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
