Job Description

What you will do
The Bridge Simulator Facility Assistant Manager (BSFAM) is responsible for ensuring that the Royal New Zealand Navy Bridge Simulator Facility is operated to meet the needs of the customer.

You will:

  • Assist in the development of training scenarios and will operate the simulator to facilitate training;   
  • Be responsible for managing the associated documentation, database creation and simulator maintenance; and
  • Deputise for the Bridge Simulator Facility Manager as required.

Within this role you will manage two-three military operators who run the simulator on a daily basis and you will be expected to train and mentor them.  Overseeing the daily operation you will carry out basic fault finding, problem solving and manage the expectations of your customers, primarily the RNZN Navigation Training School.
What we need
We are ideally seeking a person who is has a Naval background, specifically understanding maritime operations, including warfare, communications and aviation.  Additionally, an awareness of ship-handling principles and maritime regulations would be preferable. 
You will be proficient with information technology and adept at using computing systems.  By being proactive and conducting regular walk arounds you will be able to identify basic faults, conduct testing, where appropriate, and by having an understanding of networks you will be able to flesh out potential problems.
Being a confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills, you will be able to adapt your communication style to suit your audience. These skills are key within your core role as the SME of the facility, whether facilitating training or representing the RNZN in the conduct of tours, where you will be able to confidently share your knowledge and pass on your expertise. 
Exceptional planning and organisation skills will enable you to manage a busy booking system of users. The facility is in high demand and you will need to prioritise usage, under guidance, while meeting the needs of your stakeholders both internally and externally.  The BSFAM must demonstrate the ability to build relationships and understand the value of excellent customer service as well as possessing a pragmatic approach to problem solving.
You will have experience in leading small teams with a focus on personal and professional development. The team you will be joining are dynamic, professional and set high expectations for themselves.
Being literate in specific software such as K-SIM Polaris, K-SIM Navigation, ECPINS/EDCIS and MS DOS would be a definite advantage.

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
