What you will do
External board members add value to the Army Leadership Board through their private sector knowledge, experience and business acumen, thereby contributing to the quality of strategy development and oversight, decision-making and overall success.
The Board is chaired by the Chief of Army and its membership currently includes seven senior military personnel and two independent members.
What we need
The ideal candidate will have a strong private sector background, with experience in governance (either serving on a Board or as a CEO or senior executive interacting regularly with a Board), strategic, financial and business acumen. They will need to have the ability to respectfully challenge and enter into robust debate, whilst maintaining strong relationships, displaying strong emotional agility and intelligence and recognising their role as one of the team, a proven reputation and track record of excellence in his or her field and a strong personal value alignment with the values and ethos of the NZ Army. Additionally, the successful candidate may bring a global lens with a particular focus on the Pacific, and it would be desirable that they are a Chartered members of the Institute of Directors, but is not necessary. 
Meetings are held primarily in Wellington, but may be held at camps around New Zealand.  Some familiarisation visits to camps may also be scheduled, so you will need to be available to travel as/when required.
The duration of this appointment is for a 2 year period.  There are 8 meetings per year with up to 1 day preparation time per meeting.  In accordance with the Cabinet Fee Framework, the remuneration for the Independent Board Member is up to $865 per day.

The Army Leadership Board (ALB) is the strategic decision-making body for the NZ Army. It is a collective forum for the Chief of Army and their senior leadership team to decide significant issues affecting Army strategy. The ALB establishes and promotes the Army's ethos, values and strategic objectives through the Strategic Plan. All key strategic decisions that affect the outcome of the Army Strategic Plan are first discussed then collectively agreed on by the ALB.

Please note: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand (NZ) and be able to obtain and maintain the required level of NZ Government security clearance for the position applied for. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

Low level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last five years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.

If you do not meet these minimum criteria, we will not be able to accept your application.
