Job Description

What you will do

Provide, operate and maintain 'best practice' health and safety processes & systems for Defence Estate Construction, Planned Maintenance Programme and Facility Management activities, across regional camps and bases.

You will:

  • Provide health and safety advice and guidance in order to promote excellence and maximise the Defence Estate performance through compliance, communication and continuous improvement of the health and safety systems;
  • Promote and actively foster positive health and safety behaviours by encouraging feedback on policies, initiatives, operating procedures and guidelines & activity working with Estate Delivery Managers, Project Managers, Contractors and support staff to find solutions using "Prevention Principles";
  • Lead and provide investigative support to serious incidents and ensure that learning's are communicated and implemented to reduce harm in the work place. 

What we need

Experience within health & safety and first-hand knowledge of safety management; either within facilities or the construction industry. 

You will have in-depth knowledge of contemporary NZ workplace safety legislation and regulatory requirements, along with a working knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Building Act 2004, The Resource Management Act 1991 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

In addition you will:

  • Champion excellence in health and safety, policy, systems, process and compliance;
  • Set and maintain a high standard of quality assurance; 
  • Be innovative and have experience in the development and implementation of safety policy, frameworks and operational process documentation;
  • Be skilled in relationship development and communication;
  • Be able to negotiate and influence others, producing a desirable outcome; and 
  • Have the ability to work in a fast-paced and variable environment.   

Our ideal candidate has experience with implementation, monitoring, management and delivery of health & safety management outcomes for a significant organisation. 
Your relevant qualifications in health & safety and project management will set you up for success in this position, as will qualifications and experience in causal investigations.

The Defence Estate and Infrastructure's purpose is to develop, maintain and manage land, property and infrastructure assets in order to support NZDF military capabilities and all of government outcomes, through the Defence Estate Regeneration Programme. Low level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last five years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
