Job Description

What you will do

This civilian position is at the Defence Technology Agency (DTA) within the Platform Engineering section of the Platform and Protection Systems group. The primary focus of this role is to conduct specialist technical work relating to defence platforms, including space (satellite) systems and robotic/autonomous vehicles.

Typically you will be undertaking future-focused research into novel platform technologies, which requires comprehensive systems engineering skills to support prototype development, integration and proof-of-concept testing. This will include liaising with stakeholders, and applying a range of engineering analysis methods and tools to solve real issues. The work is mechanical and aerospace engineering centric and includes activities such as data acquisition and platform performance, thermodynamic and structural analysis. You will also need to be willing and able to get out into the field to support experimental trials and other physical testing as the need arises. We want someone who is highly motivated with strong initiative to develop intelligent and innovative solutions.

What we need

This role would ideally suit an intermediate level or senior engineer, with a strong foundation in a related field. Within this role you will have the opportunity to be involved in finding solutions to some very interesting technical problems. In addition to this, there are lots of opportunities for your own professional development.

You will be joining a team who are passionate about the work they do and the role they play in contributing to NZ and the NZDF. DTA also has a friendly, collaborative and intellectually stimulating professional environment.

Applicants must hold a tertiary level qualification in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering (minimum of honours) and preferably a post graduate qualification. Electrical engineering degrees with relevant experience will also be considered. A sound understanding of electronics and software development would also be an advantage.

A full driver's licence is essential, as is the ability to travel domestically and internationally when needed.

Who we are

The Platform and Protection Systems (PPS) Group is a team of 20 experienced scientists and engineers that develop technical solutions primarily in support of the NZDF's land, sea and air vehicles. The team maintains core capabilities in mechanical engineering, chemistry, power and energy and personnel protection. It has strong test, evaluation and analysis capabilities. The group's activities and services span future-focused research and acquisition support, through to in-service operational support for the RNZAF, RNZN and NZ Army.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force is contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.

Why Us

This is a great opportunity to join a strong engineering team focused on supporting the delivery of capability from the New Zealand Defence Force's air, land and sea vehicles, as well as leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as space systems and robotic/autonomous vehicles.

In return for your expertise, dedication and hard work, NZDF is offering remuneration reflective of your experience, along with:

  • Great benefits for you and your family;
  • Full time ongoing work;
  • Fully funded life cover up to $300,000;
  • Access to holiday accommodation across NZ;
  • Discounts Handbook for selected retail, entertainment and service providers;
  • 5 weeks annual leave per year.
