Job Description

  • Are you looking for a position where you can have a positive impact on the resilience and security of New Zealand's transport system?
  • Want to work with an engaged and forward-thinking team?
  • Want to develop your skills and policy expertise?

Opportunity to work at the cutting edge of policy.

We're looking for two Senior Advisers to join our Resilience and Security team, based in our Wellington office.

The ability of our transport system to function effectively during a range of adverse conditions, and then to recover quickly to acceptable levels of service, is fundamental to the longer-term well-being of communities, and New Zealand's economic productivity.

The Ministry takes a broad view of transport resilience, including the security of New Zealand's transport system. In undertaking its work, the Ministry considers the impacts on the transport system of all hazard events including natural, technological, social and political events. Hazard events may take the form of sudden shocks (such as earthquakes or terrorist attacks) and their severity and probability may be affected by emergent risks (including the impacts of climate change and demographic shifts).

As a member of the Resilience and Security team, you'll have the chance to work in an exciting policy area with a vast range of stakeholders, providing advice to Ministers on relevant transport issues.

This includes working across the sector to:

  • build a longer-term strategy to improve transport system resilience and security, including a clear vision and outcomes framework
  • encourage engagement and collaboration across the transport sector on transport system resilience and security
  • provide clear advice on the appropriate role government should play to achieve a resilient and secure transport system
  • responding professionally and comprehensively to requests from the public and the Minister.

Ideally we are looking for two Senior Advisers:

  • For one of the roles you will have ideally at least three years' experience in a relevant field. You'll join us with solid experience in leading and steering projects, problem-solving complex and ambiguous strategic issues, assessing options and advising on a direction. Along with your analytical skills, you'll be a strong collaborative team-player, who flourishes in coaching and mentoring others. You'll lead key programmes of work, shaping policy advice for Ministers
  • For the second role you will also hold relevant experience and knowledge of resilience frameworks (knowledge of the 4R framework is essential) and the emergency management sector. Knowledge of the CIMS framework will also be an advantage.

We'll also consider candidates with equivalent experience providing relevant professional advice in a consulting, industry or other setting who can demonstrate learning agility and the ability to pick up policy quickly.

Both of these roles may require you to obtain and maintain a security clearance of 'SECRET'.

The Ministry places a strong emphasis on professional development, and you'll receive plenty of support to take ownership of your role.

These are permanent positions, however we are open to considering a secondment opportunity for the right candidate. Join this energetic, motivated agency and make your contribution to New Zealand society, now and in the future.
