Job Description

  • Play a key role in NZ's highly regarded search and rescue function
  • Be part of a small but highly productive team, keen to make a difference for NZ
  • Help advise practical solutions that will make a difference to people's lives

New Zealand Search and Rescue (NZSAR) Secretariat supports the NZSAR Council to ensure New Zealand has effective Search and Rescue services for people in distress throughout New Zealand's Search and Rescue Region in order to save lives.

The NZSAR Council provides high level strategic governance and leadership to all search and rescue agencies in New Zealand.

Its functions are to:

  1. provide strong strategic co-ordination for all search and rescue in New Zealand
  2. provide strategic policy advice to government
  3. be responsible for developing and maintaining a New Zealand search and rescue plan
  4. be responsible for establishing a New Zealand search and rescue vision, mission and goals.

The NZSAR Secretariat is hosted by the Ministry of Transport (MoT).

You will be responsible for a range of information and data sources as well as providing robust analysis of that information and transforming it into meaningful products to inform sound decision making. You will be comfortable providing insights and themes around investment, capability and risks. The analysis you produce will have a direct and meaningful impact on the search and rescue sector and its ability to locate missing people and save lives.

You will be expected to maintain a database of all SAR operations and coordinate a wide range SAR sector information sources including surveys, operational reviews and other tools. You will also provide systemic assurance to the NZSAR Council on New Zealand's multi agency SAR system and our international SAR responsibilities.

Ideally, you will be able to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders, have a sound ability to translate ideas into insights and reports, and be comfortable presenting to an audience. You will have a background in data science/data preparation/data management, research and managing information systems.

As part of a small team, but working collaboratively with a large and dispersed sector, you have a wide array of responsibilities and significant opportunities to influence the sector. With multiple projects on the go at any one time, prioritising your time will be essential.

If this sounds like the type of challenge you are ready for, we encourage you to find out more by visiting our website www.nzsar.govt.nz or contacting applications@transport.govt.nz for more information or to arrange a confidential discussion with the hiring manager.
