Full-time, permanent role.

To support the strategic partnership between Whitireia and WelTec the Academic Directorate is responsible for leading, guiding and monitoring academic quality assurance and evaluative activities across the two institutions. In addition, the Academic Directorate ensures that staff have the capability necessary to deliver future-focused approaches to learning design, teaching and assessment to enable our learners to be employment-ready and contribute positively to their communities. The Academic Directorate also has responsibility for building research capability, particularly in areas of applied research that have direct relevance to our teaching programmes.

Based in the Academic Directorate, the appointee will work closely with Directors, Heads of Schools, colleagues and academic staff. 

The purpose of this position is is to lead and manage the Academic Quality Assurance and Evaluation team. This group is responsible for quality assurance and evaluation initiatives at Whitireia and WelTec developed to enable and support delivery of high quality academic programmes and institution-wide commitment to evaluation of teaching and learning activities, as well as responsiveness to stakeholders' needs.

Key accountabilities are to:

  • lead a high performing team to develop academic staff knowledge, understanding, expertise and confidence in academic programme development to meet learners' needs and to meet New Zealand Qualifications Authority and other central agency criteria for approval
  • work with Directors and Heads of Schools to actively promote and guide institutional commitment to self-assessment, evaluation and responsiveness to support delivery of high quality academic programmes that enable graduates to be employment-ready and make a positive contribution to the wider community
  • lead and manage preparation for New Zealand Qualifications Authority External Evaluations and Reviews of Whitireia, WelTec and their subsidiaries
  • lead a programme of development, review, and maintenance of academic policies and procedures to support Centres of Learning to provide students with consistent learning experiences across Whitireia and WelTec
  • play a lead role in establishing and maintaining a positive and constructive relationship with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and other relevant government agencies and provide timely and accurate information and advice to them
  • manage preparation of agenda and papers for Academic Board, and Academic Board Committees and provide advice to the Chair of Academic Board and Chairs of other committees as required
  • be a significant contributor to the Academic Directorate leadership group through provision of high quality strategic advice.

We are looking for a candidate with the following, qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • A postgraduate degree in Education or relevant subject area, preferably with teaching experience
  • Recent experience in a senior leadership and managerial role, in a New Zealand tertiary education organisation, with knowledge and understanding of the quality assurance requirements for tertiary education institutions, particularly, Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics
  • Prior experience in leading and managing evaluative activities with respect to academic programmes in a tertiary education context
  • The ability to lead strategic planning and manage operational activities in a complex fast-paced tertiary education environment with a high degree of competence
  • A competent leader of high performing staff, with ability to nurture and support diverse strengths and engender a commitment to ongoing quality improvement
