Job Description

  • Looking for a position where you can have a positive impact on the future of Auckland and NZ?
  • Want to work with an engaged and forward-thinking team?
  • Want to develop your skills and policy expertise?

Transport is essential for the lives of every New Zealander. It allows us to access economic and social opportunities within New Zealand and across the globe. The Ministry of Transport is the government's chief policy adviser on transport. The Ministry of Transport is a small, collegial agency that lends itself to day-to-day variety. It's not just about roads and rails, transport affects every area of our society and we need to think in broad terms.

We're looking for a Policy or Senior Policy Adviser to join our Investment team. This role is based in the Auckland Policy Office (APO). The Auckland Office is led by the State Services Commission and includes representatives from 15 government departments. As an Auckland based Adviser you'll need to demonstrate commitment to building relationships, and working closely with your Wellington colleagues and those from other agencies.

The policy issues that the Ministry considers are growing in priority and complexity. As a member of the Investment team you'll have the chance to work closely with central and local government agencies to provide advice to Ministers on transport funding matters.

This includes the following:

  • Ensuring Auckland's transport network supports a fast growing, liveable and productive city
  • Implementing the Government's vision for transport to shape urban development and housing opportunities
  • The development of the Government Policy Statement for land transport, which guides over $4 billion of investment in transport each year
  • Exploring how to ensure transport keeps the regions connected and successful
  • Monitoring how land transport revenue is tracking
  • Evaluating the performance of transport investments made through the National Land Transport Fund
  • Responding professionally and comprehensively to requests from the public and the Minister

Whether joining as an experienced Policy Adviser or Senior Adviser you'll need strong analytical skills, including numerical analysis, a strength for relationship management, and the ability to write reports and communicate well. You'll be comfortable working with ambiguity and will demonstrate a great attitude, initiative, and a genuine desire to grow your professional skills and experience.

We're interested in hearing from Policy Advisers, with ideally at least two years of policy development experience. We'll also consider candidates with equivalent experience providing professional advice in a legal, consulting or industry setting who can demonstrate learning agility and the ability to pick up policy quickly.

Candidates interested in the Senior Policy Adviser role, will need to be able to show solid experience in leading and steering projects, problem-solving complex and ambiguous issues, coaching others and shaping policy advice on key issues for Ministers.

Whether applying for a role as Policy Adviser or Senior Policy Adviser, we have a strong focus on professional development, and you'll receive plenty of support to take ownership of your role.

Join this high-paced, motivated team and make your contribution to New Zealand society, now and in the future.
