Job Description

  • Are you curious about how transport can shape the future of New Zealand?
  • Are you looking for a role that will help the transport system make better use of data and research to guide its direction?
  • Do you have great organisational and facilitational skills that can help bring the transport sector together to improve, share and develop its use of data and research?

As the government's system lead on transport, the Ministry has an important role to ensure transport improves wellbeing and liveability for New Zealanders. Key to this is having robust evidence base that allows us to understand how the transport system is, and can, meet its desired outcomes.

We are looking for a Senior Adviser for a 12 month period, to help our Domain Strategy team develop and implement a new Transport Evidence Base Strategy (TEBS).

The strategy adopts a lifecycle approach that combines:

  • the enduring information/ data needs of the sector (this was developed with Statistics NZ as the Transport Domain Plan)
  • the longer term research requirements for the transport sector (including a University engagement programme)
  • an evaluation strategy and programme.

TEBS has been the subject of wide sector engagement and buy in and is almost complete.

The role will therefore be involved in the following:

  • Completing the strategy and action plan and taking it through sign off
  • Managing the release of the Strategy across the sector
  • Oversight of the implementation of the Strategy and action plan (which it is envisaged will be the main part of the role) within the Ministry and across the sector
  • Ongoing rollout of the University engagement programme
  • Oversight and management of engagement channels including the Transport Knowledge Hubs and the Transport Knowledge Conference

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • A background and interest in data and/ or research
  • Strong project/ programme management skills
  • Good communication, interpersonal and relationship skills
  • An understanding and ability to develop strategy/ policy and translate this into action

The role is to cover an existing secondment in the team and will be for a 12 month period, ideally starting in September/ October. We are open to how the role may be filled either as a secondment, fixed-term contract - or happy to discuss other possible routes. The role is based at the Ministry's Wellington office.

The Ministry of Transport is a small, friendly agency, with a wide influence, where you'll be close to the action, and have plenty of opportunity to contribute and develop.

The salary band for this role is $91,656 to $129,397.

To apply please submit your CV and cover letter at https://mot.careercentre.net.nz/Job/

Applications close Sunday, 22 September 2019.
