Ara Whiwhi Mahi - The Opportunity
As a Tax Counsel/ Specialist (Level 1 or 2) you will be working in a team environment, researching, analysing, and making decisions on complex tax technical issues. You will work across Inland Revenue in a collaborative way to inform and enable quality decision making; and be involved with a range of technical projects including disputes, binding rulings, and public guidance.
This is an intellectually challenging role collaborating with like-minded people who are committed to producing work to a high quality for our customers.
Mōu - About you
To be successful in this role you will bring the following:
- Ability to carry out tax technical research, interpretation, high-quality analysis and opinion writing on issues which are often complex and difficult
- Excellent project and time management skills
- Background in tax law is essential
- Qualifications:
- A law degree and eligibility to hold a practising certificate is needed for a Rōia Tāke (Tax Counsel) role
- An applicant with an accounting degree with the right experience would also be considered, but with the alternative title of Mātanga Tāke (Tax Specialist)
Navigating comfortably (or interested in further developing your experience) with Te Ao Māori, Tikanga Māori, and Te Reo Māori would also be beneficial.

The Te Tari Tohutohu Tāke (Tax Counsel Office) at Inland Revenue is responsible for giving tax technical advice, specifically about the interpretation and application of taxation law. We supply a range of related advice and services to both internal and external customers. We are committed to diversity and inclusion and welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds.
