Health, Safety and Sustainability Advisor

Whitireia Community Polytechnic (Te Kura Matatini o Whitireia) and Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) (Te Whare Wānanga o te Awakairangi) (W&W) are highly respected institutes of technology established under the Education Act. In 2012 the institutes formed a strategic partnership to build on the strengths of the existing institutions through greater collaboration. The key driver of the partnership is putting students first and together we serve around 15,000 students every year in the Wellington region and across New Zealand.

W&W requires a Health, Safety and Sustainability Advisor whose primary responsibility will be to ensure the effective implementation of the Health and Safety and Sustainability strategies and supporting procedures, to all W&W Sites.

This position reports to the Health and Safety Manager, and is expected to be very hands on. Your time will be divided between mentoring and coaching, assisting with the engagement and safety education of the workforce, and embedding the HSS audit process at every stage.

You will be able to demonstrate your success in changing and influencing a positive safety culture, and will have strong coaching and communication skills, with the ability to build and sustain key relationships.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Leadership and stakeholder engagement in Health, Safety and Sustainability
  • Provide HSS leadership and technical support to aid in the promotion of continuous improvement
  • Mentor, coach and support site coordinators to drive increased awareness and capabilities within Health, Safety and Sustainability
  • Health, Safety and Sustainability Systems Management
  • Ensuring Legislative and Health and Safety Procedural compliance
  • Effective roll out of the company safety programs and HS related training
  • Innovation and Project Management
  • Wellbeing, Diversity and Inclusiveness
  • Management of injury claims and rehabilitation/return to work

Our ideal candidate will have:


  • Tertiary Degree qualification in Health, Safety or relevant degree field (Environmental Management)
  • Incident Investigation qualifications

Skills and experience

  • Ideally 3 to 5 years experience with the implementation of HS systems and procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A successful track record with persuading, coaching and influencing managers in Health and Safety best practice
  • Strong administration/organisational skills, including meeting deadlines whilst maintaining quality
  • Oral and written communication and presentation skills of the highest standard
  • Previous success with the development of individuals in HSS disciplines and legal requirements
