Job Description

  • Looking for a position where you can influence strategic policy and legislation to have a positive impact on the future of Auckland and NZ?
  • Do you have strong analytical skills and a strength for working with a range of stakeholders?
  • Do you want to work with an engaged and forward-thinking team, helping reimagine the role of rail in New Zealand?

There's never been a more exciting time to work for the transport sector. Transport is a critical part of daily life for all New Zealanders. The Ministry of Transport is the government's chief policy adviser on transport. Our job is to ensure that our transport system supports a broad range of ambitious outcomes, and is positively shaping the cities and places we inhabit.

Part of this ambition is to help transform the role of rail within an integrated transport network, placing it at the heart of strategies for urban and regional growth, driving mode shift, reducing emissions and improving safety. It also involves taking a system-wide approach to freight, identifying the most appropriate strategy and investments to increase efficiencies and reduce environmental impacts from road, rail and coastal shipping.

In order to achieve this, we're looking for an experienced Senior Adviser to join our Rail and Freight team. The role will be based in the Auckland Policy Office (APO), which is led by the State Services Commission and includes representatives from 15 government departments.

The role involves leading key pieces of work to drive innovation and ambition for rail and freight, as well as working in partnership with central and local government agencies to provide crucial advice to Ministers.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • advising the Government on how best to deliver its priorities for rail, coastal shipping and the freight system
  • working with others to develop bold transport policy, and support the delivery of key projects that put rail at the heart of strategies for urban and regional growth
  • opportunities to help implement the recommendations arising from the Future of Rail project
  • contributing to a work programme on a multi modal freight system in New Zealand.

To be successful in this role, you'll need a strategic focus, strong analytical skills, a strength for relationship management, and the ability to write and communicate effectively. You'll demonstrate a great attitude, initiative, and a genuine desire to grow your professional skills and experience. As a senior, you will also be expected to provide coaching and guidance to others, and to work collaboratively across teams to support thought leadership and drive innovation within the Ministry.

We're a small, friendly agency, working in a fast-paced environment. You'll be close to the action and have plenty of opportunity to connect across the Ministry, with senior leaders and stakeholders. We pride ourselves on maintaining a work culture that is supportive, encourages learning and recognises success.
