Job Description

Principal Analyst – Resource Management System

  • Thought leadership role
  • Wellington based

The Ministry for the Environment is looking for a Principal Analyst with a wide range of experience operating at the highest level of policy development.

We are looking for a Principal Analyst to play a key thought leadership role in a cross-cutting workstream the Ministry is leading on the future of the resource management and planning system.   The world we operate in is changing.  As our economy continues to grow and evolve, new ways of thinking are needed to provide for the needs of current and future generations.  We have major challenges ahead of us, such as affordable housing, effective and resilient infrastructure, water policy and land use, that require a responsive policy framework, and innovative, multi-faceted approaches that balance the often conflicting views of all stakeholders.

The Ministry for the Environment is about providing intelligent and innovative policy advice.  This policy advice guides the government to make decisions that ensure New Zealand's natural and built resources are managed well to deliver economic performance and wider prosperity now and into the future.  The Ministry's vision is that Aotearoa New Zealand is the most liveable place in the world.  As a Principal Analyst you'll play a key role in shaping the way New Zealand manages its natural and built resources, and their contribution to the country's economic growth and overall wellbeing.

This is a challenging role that will see you using your highly developed conceptual and analytical abilities as you navigate complex, emerging, and often ambiguous issues.  Your intellectual curiosity means you'll be comfortable creating and taking opportunities and working across environmental, economic and social issues.  You'll also be politically astute, with the ability to reconcile competing and conflicting viewpoints to reach societal consensus on policy approaches.

Working alongside and supporting Ministry Directors and Managers, you'll provide comprehensive, innovative, high quality advice, and help to build capability within the Ministry by providing the leadership that will coach and mentor others.  You will use your excellent judgement and relationship management skills to influence stakeholders to achieve the Ministry's outcomes.

If you think you have the experience and enthusiasm to make a real difference in this role we would like to hear from you.  A position description is attached for your information.  If you require further information about this role please contact Katherine Wilson (Director, Resource Management) on

To apply click on the Apply Online button below to complete the questionnaire and submit along with your resume and cover letter outlining your interest in the role.  Salary range $116,895 to $155,860 neg.

Applications close Wednesday 2 August 2017.  Vacancy ref MFE/1781.
