Midwifery First Year of Practice

Dunedin and Southland Hospitals

  • · Are you in your final year of midwifery study and thinking about options for next year?
  • · Wanting to join an experienced and supportive team for your first year of midwifery practice?
  • · Graduate positions available both in Queen Mary Maternity, Dunedin Hospital and on the Maternity Ward, Southland Hospital

About the Southern DHB

At the Southern District Health Board (SDHB) we value our community and it is therefore essential to us that we take the very best care of our women, their babies and whanau at such an important time in their lives. We have a new graduate Midwifery Programme available in both of our main Hospitals, Dunedin and Southland for 1 year, at 64 hours per fortnight.

About the teams

Our Southland Hospital Maternity Service births around 1,200 babies every year and provides antenatal, labour, birth and postnatal care for women who have LMCs or who require secondary care.

Queen Mary Maternity Centre, located at Dunedin Hospital and birthing around 1,800 babies every year, offers primary birthing facilities and is also a secondary and tertiary level obstetric service provider for the Otago / Southland region.

At both Hospitals we work very closely together with the midwifery and medical schools and LMCs to ensure we give the kind of care our patients deserve. We are looking for new grads with a commitment to quality care and the embodiment of the Southern DHB values, Kind, Open, Positive and a Sense of Community in all that they do.

About the role - what's in it for me?

Close affiliation with local tertiary education providers ensures good opportunities for continued Learning. These new graduate positions are for rostered shifts across antenatal, delivery and postnatal areas in a supportive environment with a nominated preceptor and includes full orientation with supported educational opportunities.

Don't take our word for it, here's what our last year's intake said:

Southland: "I found my First Year of Practice here at Southland Hospital a really good experience. My midwifery colleagues were really supportive and always available for advice and support when I needed it. As a New Grad I was given a wide range of clinical experiences including both primary and secondary care of women and their babies, as well as being released to attend the various MFYP training and education days. By the end of my first year of practice I felt that I had grown and developed into a confident midwife practitioner."

Dunedin: "As a new graduate midwife is was great to gain employment at the Southern District Health Board, to consolidate knowledge and gain clinical skills after completing my bachelor of midwifery. I have found it to be a safe and supportive environment, where colleagues are more than willing to answer my numerous questions and offer encouragement as I navigate forming my midwifery practice."
