The Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai is the water services regulator for Aotearoa New Zealand. It is a Crown entity governed by a Minister-appointed Board and advised on Māori interests and knowledge by Te Puna, a statutory Māori Advisory Group. Our responsibilities are to protect and promote drinking water safety and related public health outcomes - we regulate drinking water suppliers on behalf of the public. We also have an oversight role in relation to the environmental performance of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater networks.

Join us in this newly established role leading an important area of work!

The Senior Advisor, Treaty obligations is a critical role that reports to the Chief Advisor, Sector Advice and Relations and will lead a programme of work to ensure the Authority meets our Treaty of Waitangi obligations. You will bring strong understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Treaty settlement mechanisms and arrangements and how these operate in a Crown context. You will also bring prior experience in applying the Treaty and obligations in a policy and/or regulatory context. With this experience, you will be well placed to provide sound, relevant and timely advice to support the Authority.

You will bring innate understanding of te ao Māori and strong communication skills to engage collaboratively with iwi and hapū as the Treaty partner, alongside a variety of stakeholders across the water sector including water service entities, territorial authorities, and broader communities to progress our work.

We are seeking someone who is comfortable working with a degree of ambiguity, and at pace, to manage complex and evolving issues. Innovation and creativity are key drivers in the way we work - our size requires us to be smart and agile.

We are looking for someone with:

  • 5+ years relevant experience
  • Deep knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi and treaty settlements
  • An understanding of the regulatory environment in Aotearoa
  • Proven experience fostering strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills to drive engagement, and challenge when necessary
  • Able to work independently with initiative
