Job Description

In Parliament, there's never a dull moment. In the Office of the Clerk, you'll be right there as it all plays out. The Office of the Clerk provides secretariat and administrative services to the House of Representatives, including advice on legal issues and specialist parliamentary procedure.

As Parliamentary Officer (Clerk of Committee) you'll play a lead role in overseeing services to one or more designated select committees. As well as attending all meetings and coordinating the committee's programme of work, you'll work closely with Members of Parliament, advising on committee procedures and correct parliamentary practices.

This is not a managerial role but it will be your role to provide direction and support to others within the team. As well as ensuring the committees are on track, you will bring to the role your logical thinking skills and the ability to influence. You'll be building a strong, trusting professional relationship with the Chair of your committee so you'll need to be tactful, diplomatic, and confident working with senior public figures.

Key to your success in this role relies on your strong skills in the following:

  • Highly organised and methodical in your thinking
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong planner in nature
  • Sound judgement and decision making

This is a senior role so previous experience as a senior advisor with familiarity with parliamentary procedure and the machinery of government would be a definite advantage. A background working with a board or committee at a senior level would be beneficial.
