About the Team

Te Ihowhenua, the School of Geography at the University of Otago, is nationally and internationally recognised for the quality of its graduates and the impact of its research. The School supports graduate and postgraduate programmes in Physical and Human Geography and Environmental Management, as well as Planning and International Development. Its aim is to deliver globally relevant, research-informed teaching that enables graduates to address contemporary global and local challenges and make a difference.

The School offers BA and BSc degrees in Geography and Environmental Management, taught master's degrees in development, planning and applied environmental management, as well as research Master's and PhD degrees.

The role - Te mahi

Te Ihowhenua, the School of Geography, seeks to appoint a skilled and versatile Teaching Fellow to support and teach primarily into programmes in Human Geography and Environmental Management at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The role would suit an early career academic looking to develop their teaching across environmental studies and/or geography.

As a Te Tiriti-led University, and a School that focuses on human-environment relationships and processes, a demonstrated understanding of Te Tiriti and key concepts in te Ao Māori as they relate to te taiao is required. We particularly welcome candidates with knowledge of mātauranga Māori and other Indigenous knowledge systems. The successful candidate will support and contribute to existing courses and, depending on expertise and experience, may be required to offer a full course at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Skills and experience - Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

Key skills and experience expected in this role:

  • A PhD or tertiary teaching experience in Geography or a closely related field.
  • Some teaching experience, with a desire to develop teaching and facilitate learning success.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to work with students and staff from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.
  • A commitment to working in a culturally safe and respectful manner, and a demonstrated understanding and appreciation of Te Ao Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, and Pasifika values.

Any of the following areas of specialisation are desirable: urban, political, environmental or social geographies; planning; development; sustainability; and environmental policy and governance.

An understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand's environmental history, governance and geography is an advantage.

Preference will be given to applicants who bring cultural awareness into their teaching and who can provide culturally appropriate support to students.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), fixed-term position for two years, based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The salary range for this role is $75,727 to $87,849 or $91,614 to $102,900, depending on skills and experience.
