Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
We are looking for a Technical Officer or Advanced Technical Officer to work 3 days a week (22.5 hours, 0.6 FTE) to provide high quality technical support for teaching and research with a focus in Sport and Human Movement within the Division of Health.
The expectation is for this role to be based at the Adams Centre two days (15 hours) per week and at the Velodrome one day (7.5 hours) per week. For this varied role, you'll need to be technically savvy, as well as organised and enjoy the process and outcomes of Sport-based scientific research. Primarily you will be responsible for technical support around the use, instruction and maintenance of our laboratory equipment and instrumentations, as well as the associated management of a range of laboratory data, ensuring it is accurate, quality assured and readily available for the end users (students and researchers).
Core activities will include:
- planning and logistics for laboratory-based teaching and research
- expert advice, guidance, and support to students and staff on technical operational matters
- maintain, calibrate, install and service laboratory instruments and sensors, sample collection and data analysis.
Salary for the Technical Officer will be in the range of $69,199 to $82,228 per year (pro-rated) and for the Advanced Technical Officer the salary will be in the range of $82,795 to $$94,691 per year (pro-rated) based on skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position.

You will be a technical expert or keen to develop new skills – the kind of person who is hands-on and wants to help make any piece of equipment work. You'll have experience overseeing the day-to-day running of a teaching and research laboratory, and of assigned equipment including upgrading and resource scheduling. You are in your element maintaining, calibrating, installing, and servicing instruments and sensors, as well as serving as a resource to students and staff. Your work ethos reflects tikanga best practices.
No week will be the same as another, so you'll be adaptable and able to work anywhere. You might be on a field programme out in the community, or you might be fixing equipment in the laboratory. You are eager to embrace new ways of doing things. You are proactive and not afraid to ask pertinent questions to help you navigate your role.
You will be self-motivated and quick learning, with a demonstrated capacity to work effectively as part of our great team. An ability to relate effectively and sensitively to students and staff from a variety of backgrounds and cultures is essential.
