Maintenance Fitter at Wellington Water, Wellington - Wairarapa

This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week based at the Carterton Depot

The remuneration range for this role is NZ$64,521 - NZ$90,785 (this includes KiwiSaver). Remuneration is dependent on skills and experience.

The opportunity

As a Maintenance Fitter, you will play a key role in maintaining mechanical equipment and systems across water treatment plants and bulk water distribution assets in the South Wairarapa.

This is a practical, field-based role where you'll carry out planned and reactive maintenance, including servicing, repairing and replacing equipment such as pumps, valves, compressors and dosing systems. You'll also support condition assessments, identify potential issues before they escalate, and help maintain high levels of asset reliability and performance.

Working closely with operations teams and contractors, you'll ensure all work is completed safely, meets regulatory and water quality standards, and minimises impact on customers and the environment. You'll also be involved in incident and emergency response, supporting critical infrastructure when it matters most.

This is a varied and rewarding role suited to someone who enjoys hands-on work, problem-solving, and working out in the field to make a real difference.

About you

You're a practical, safety-focused tradesperson who enjoys working in a team environment and takes pride in delivering high-quality work.

You will have:

  • A mechanical trade qualification in fitting and welding, turning, or similar
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence
  • The ability to meet the physical requirements of the role, including working at heights, in confined spaces, and undertaking manual work

You will also bring:

  • Experience maintaining mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, compressors or similar assets (water industry experience advantageous)
  • Good understanding of health, safety and environmental practices
  • The ability to follow procedures and ensure work is completed to a high standard
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and respond to faults and risks
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to complete documentation and use systems on a laptop or tablet
  • The ability to work collaboratively with team members, contractors and operational staff
  • A Class 2 licence and willingness to work overtime when required are advantageous

Wellington Water is the professional water services provider across Greater Wellington and South Wairarapa. Our job is to provide safe and healthy drinking water, collect and treat wastewater, and ensure the stormwater network is well managed.
