A new approach to health and safety is driving increased leadership and cooperation across core government agencies. The focus of this new venture is 35 public service and other government agencies with a combined workforce of over 90,000 employees and substantial engagement with volunteers and NGOs in essential service delivery across New Zealand. The newly established Government Health and Safety Lead is based in the Department of Corrections. It supports agency Chief Executives to strengthen the performance of their agencies and to enhance overall system capability.

 

This role of Chief Adviser is responsible for the provision of strategic, technical and operational health and safety support and advice. Principally you will work with agency senior leaders and practitioners to enhance capability and promote a proactive health and safety culture across the sector.

 

As an advocate for contemporary health and safety principles you will be accountable for

  • Delivering the functional lead work programme for 2018
  • Technical leadership in health and safety and practice lead for the sector
  • Implementation of systems initiatives
  • Consultation with a diverse range of stakeholders on policy and procedural initiatives
  • Health and safety risk analysis and advice

 

The successful appointee will have extensive health and safety management experience within a large, complex and high risk environment. You will be politically astute, possessing credibility enabling effective relationships with senior leaders in government and a variety of stakeholders. It is imperative that you can demonstrate the ability to think strategically coupled with the skills and expertise to operationalise a large programme.
