Medical Registrar - Care of the Elderly at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Te Tai Tokerau, Northland

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

  • Advanced or Basic Trainee: Medical Registrar – Care of the Elderly
  • Whangarei Hospital
  • Permanent Fulltime
  • 2026 Training Year – starting February 2026

Achieving the best health outcomes for our patients starts with expecting the best from ourselves, and right now Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – Northland Te Tai Tokerau (Health New Zealand) is looking for an exceptional Medical Trainee to join our accredited basic and Advanced Physician training programme.

We are accredited for twelve months of advanced training in Geriatric Medicine and twelve months advanced training in Non-core (General Medicine) training, as well as two years of basic medical training.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

From study support and professional development, through to growing new services and facilities, the future at Health New Zealand is bright. Here, you'll be doing what matters to your career, all whilst enjoying a flexible and healthy work-life balance.

About the Role

As a Registrar in Care of the Elderly you will be able to do two six month rotations, one in Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) and one in Rehabilitation. Both areas have an excellent multidisciplinary team and believe in patient centred care.

In the ACE role we aim to improve the patient journey and minimise inpatient stay for those with frailty issues by rapid comprehensive assessment from the front door to enable early discharge, prevent deconditioning and enable coordinated discharge planning.

You will be working with a Consultant led multidisciplinary team which assesses and manages older people in ED, the Admissions Unit or our ward-based ACE beds. The ACE unit is a 10-12 bedded service which focuses on medical patients with frailty issues.  It has a short length of stay thanks to the dedication of the team with a real focus on problem solving and open and honest conversations.

In the Rehabilitation registrar role you will have the opportunity to gain experience in inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics and orthogeriatric assessment.

Both roles incorporate a weekly clinic or community component where you will also develop experience in movement disorders, dementia and falls assessments.

We provide close supervision for trainees in inpatient, community and outpatient settings, allied with a commitment to teaching. We have weekly medical registrar teaching, journal clubs and Grand Rounds.  There is also the opportunity to participate in the Northern Regional Geriatric Medicine Journal Club in Auckland.
