Public Health Nurse - Kaitaia - Northern Region - NPHS (Fixed Term) at Te Whatu Ora, Northland

About the Role

We currently have a full-time, fixed-term parental cover position available to join our team as a Public Health Nurse.  In this role, you will deliver public health nursing services throughout the community, with a focus on promoting and protecting the health of the population. Key responsibilities include conducting population health assessments, addressing a broad range of health determinants, prioritising primary prevention strategies, and consistently applying evidence-based practice to support optimal public health outcomes.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The public health nursing team is part of the National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora and works towards Pae Ora (healthy futures for all) by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.

About you

As a successful candidate, you will show and understand the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and are skilled in applying its principles effectively in your role. You build and maintain positive relationships at all levels and model an agile approach –try new approaches, learn quickly, adapt fast. You are able to utilise advanced nursing knowledge and skills through reflective practice, critical thinking and professional judgement to provide competent care and advice while working to top of scope.

  • Registered Nurse with current Nursing Council registration and Annual Practising Certificate
  • Strong competence in Māori health models and cultural safety
  • Commitment to equitable outcomes for underserved whānau and communities
  • Experience in working with iwi/ hapū and Māori communities 
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience using Patient Management Systems
  • Strong time‑management skills and attention to detail
